Part 1: Choosing the Right Keywords to Target – Keyword Competition

Everybody wants to be Number One on Google, but the big question is, Number One for what? When you do      a search on Google, you search by keywords or phrases and, based on your query, Google ranks pages it thinks are most relevant to your search. With many possible combinations, how do you decide what keywords or phrases you wish to target for which to be Number One?

Of course the easy answer is all of them, but in reality this is not achievable; you need to choose the keywords and terms you think will bring in the most targeted traffic to your site. When working up a keyword list, there are a few steps you can take to determine the best list for your site:

1/ Keyword competition– when talking about website competition you are referring to that keyword/phrase on Google. For every search query, Google references its database and determines from a list what pages should rank 1 etc. For every query you can see how large the reference list is, and, in very broad terms, the higher the number, the more competitive the term. In the example below, for “economical SEO NSW”, Google referenced over 21million pages to get it listed, which is actually considered a medium level of competition. Obviously, the lower the competition, the easier the keyword would be to rank.


2/ Website competition – for every query, you are competing with other websites for the top spot. Google first generates a list of potential pages, then ranks them according to how relevant it thinks it is to the query. The higher the authority a site has, the higher it will rank, so you not only need to consider the number of pages Google is referencing, but the quality of the pages that appear. Are the first few pages of listing taken up by .gov sites, or sites like wiki etc? If so, especially for a new site, it will take time and effort to gain enough authority to outrank the established sites. You may need to consider other variations of the terms of the keywords/phrases that you wish to target for queries that are not as populated as such high authority sites.

There are of course many variables to consider when working up a keyword list, and in Part Two we will look at short and long term keywords and what it means, and how best to determine which keywords to target. Part Two: Choosing the Right Keywords to Target – Long versus Short Tail

You will often hear the term “short and long tail keywords” mentioned, but what do they mean and why are they an important concept to grasp?

To put it simply, every search query involves a series of words, be it a single word or a longer phrase. “Short tail keywords” refer to 1-2 keyword phrases like “party” or “party supplies”; “long tail keywords” refers to longer versions like “kids party supplies” or longer. Of course, knowing what they mean is of little use if you do not know how to utilise them in your keyword decision making process.

Determining which keywords to target is one of the most important steps in designing your website or SEO campaign. You need to find a niche that is not only low in competition, but also provides enough search volume that it will make the website viable. The lower the competition, the more likely your website will reach high ranks in a shorter time frame, but it is no use ranking on Page One if nobody is using those keywords to search. Generally, the short tail keywords are higher competition but higher search volume, while the long tail keyword are the opposite; the trick to good keyword selection is finding long tail keywords with low competition and good search volume.

We discussed how to assess keyword competition  in Part One, but how do you determine search volume for a keyword? There are many programs and methods to find out search volume for a particular keyword, but the cheapest way is to use tools provided free by Google. Simply sign up for an Adwords account and use the keyword planner. It can be a time consuming process, so if you are unsure or lack the time, hire a local SEO provider to help.

Using the keyword planning tool, we can give a quick example of how to narrow down your keyword list. In our example, let’s assume we are creating a kid’s party supply store, and need to determine our targets. Initially, we look at the most obvious keyword, “party supplies”; the monthly search volume is excellent at over 18,000 searches per month, but when we look at the competition it’s quite high at 138 million, so would be difficult for a new site to gain traction quickly. Added to that, the term is very general , so a lot of people searching for that term would not be interested in simply kid’s party supplies – so even once ranked, the traffic it might produce would not convert well.

Knowing that the niche obviously garners traffic, we then need to find keywords more targeted to our website, but with good volume. The next step is to look at the specific niche keyword itself, “kid’s party supplies”. Right away the competition is halved, and it gets good volume at 1,300 searches per month. The volume is not as high as the shorter tail version, but it’s very targeted in that all the traffic would be looking for your product, hence would make a much better target. You can also look at specific product lines to see if there are opportunities for good keywords; for example, let’s say the proposed store stocks “Peppa Pig party supplies”: the competition is only 1 million and the search volume is higher at 1,900 searches per month.

Searching to determine the best keywords and phrases can be a long process, however a few hours spent working out good targets can save you months down the track in working towards your site ranking and being profitable.

Is Your Website Idea Viable?

Having a great idea for a website is only the first step in determining if it will be viable as a commercial entity. Before you part with your hard earned dollars, developing the next great thing in websites, take a step back and review the niche it fits into determine whether it really is a good business idea in reality.

The first thing to do is determine  whether or not  there is an audience for what you have to offer, or if you are going to be required to build up awareness of the services product you provide. If the latter, be aware that building up a market profile can be an expensive and  time consuming  process; take that into account when developing your business plan. Just because you and your friends think it is a great idea, doesn’t mean that in reality, once you launch a website, it will take off and be the next big thing. While getting ranks for your revolutionary service or item will probably be easier, it is unlikely to help, because people will be unaware of what you offer and will simply not be searching for it. It’s not simply a case of “rank it and they will come”,  if the keywords and phrases you are ranking for are simply not commonly searched for.

Obviously the better way to do it is to work back wards when determining your market. Find keywords and phrases for which people are already searching, and use that as the basis for working out if a market exists, and how big is it without having to initially create it. Using keywords and phrases, look at how big the competition already is and how well entrenched it is. There are several key questions you need to answer…

1/ How many competitors are in the niche?

Simply search Google  in the niche you wish to target to determine how many players are already in the game.  The more saturated the market is, the harder it will be to gain a foothold to build on, as you have to assume they all also want to be on page 1 like you and are working towards that goal.

2/ How well entrenched is the competition?

Take note of what is ranking on page one for your chosen keywords and phrases. Are they high authority sites, like Gov sites, wiki or competitors sites with High PR? If all the top ranks are taken up by such sites,  be aware it will take time for your new website to gain enough authority to rank above them.

3/ How competitive are the keywords/phrases I want to target?

When you type a search query into Google, it looks at its database and creates a list of pages ranked for relevance. As a very general rule, the more pages Google finds relevant for any search, the harder it will be to rank. So even if you find a high volume keyword, you need to gauge the amount of pages you require to be on page one.

There are many variables that come into play to create a successful website, but one of the most important aspects is getting your website ranked. Tips for Small Business SEO

A website can be a great asset for any small business, but only if it can be found. Just last week I had a conversation with an old school friend about SEO and his misconception as to what it is; it came out that he thought once you build a website Google will rank it and your site will magically appear in the search results. Anyone who has launched a website will obviously know this is not the case and the website will require Search Engine Optimisation or SEO.

There are many aspects to getting a website site ranked, and the first step should be to hire a professional SEO company for advice, and to co-ordinate an ethical campaign designed to raise the profile of the website.

As a website owner though, what should you also focus your energies on to help your site rank? I have compiled my 5 top tips below, that are easy to implement, but often overlooked by many website owners…

1/ Good content – content is king in Google’s eyes, and by content I mean written content. A flashy website and nice pictures all make a website look great, but Google algorithms don’t use human eyes – so you need to ensure it to can see what the website is about.


2/ Social Media – no matter what niche you are targeting, you need to utilise social media. Setup and link from your website to Facebook, Twitter and Google + as a minimum, and post daily content to them. These are free to setup and they help to raise the profile of your website and give it greater reach.

3/ Dynamic content – Once a site is designed and launched, your job doesn’t end. A static site that is never updated can hurt a future site’s chances of keeping high ranks; why should Google care about you website when you don’t? Have a news section or, if applicable, a blog that is updated once a week.  Ensure all content is up to date.

4/ Webmaster Tools and Google Analytics – ensure both of these are setup on your website. They are a free service from Google, and give you valuable information to monitor your site’s performance and whether it has any problems that could be improved.

5/ Google Local Listing – another free service that is especially useful for small business, as most work or service a specific area. This is also a great way to help Google work out what region your service is in,  better targeting your website to reach potential customers.

All of the above are essential processes that most new website owners do not consider, but are a paramount first step to having your website recognised in Google search results. Small business SEO is often a daunting task for any new website owner, but the above tips are a great start to help you achieve your goals and make you website a success.

Choosing the right SEO Company

Website owners often come to us with a ‘simple’ request: “I want to be number one on Google” – without really knowing what they are asking and what it entails. Being listed highly in Google should be any website owner’s goal, but it’s not simply a job of launching a website and waiting for Google to thrust it into the spotlight. For a website to be successful, it must be optimised to what Google is looking for and this is where Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) Companies can help. But how do you find a good company and what should you look for?

A quick search will find a myriad of companies, all claiming to be the best and guaranteeing your site to rank; but once you cut through the hype there are a few things you should look for so you’re adding value to your business and not just a liability.

1/ They should take the time to understand your business.
SEO is a long term strategy and should be integrated within your overall marketing plans and goals. When an initial analysis is done, the SEO company should take time to understand your business and goals, and tailor a solution for you; be wary of companies that sell linking strategies with set number of links each month etc. This is a good indication they have a cookie cutter approach to SEO and haven’t really taken the time to understand your individual needs.

2/ Constant feedback and reporting.
The SEO company should be viewed as one of your team, and like all members of a company, be approachable at all times. SEO should not be a set and forget type of arrangement, and your chosen SEO agency should be available for feedback and advice as part of the service they offer. It is estimated Google will make around 300 updates to its algorithm this year alone, so your chosen SEO provider should be keeping you in the loop on these changes and actions that you as a site owner may need to undertake to take advantage of them.

3/ No lock-in contracts.
Be wary of companies that require you to pay money up front for extended contracts. Instead, favour companies that work on a month to month basis in terms of payment, as they will constantly be proving their value to you. A company that asked for payment up front for 6 -12 months in advance is more likely to be more interested in their bank balance rather than your SEO results. A company should have enough confidence in their ability to work for a monthly fee, knowing at the end of that month their value has been proven and you will continue the employment arrangement.
